Grisly photos of slain Americans in Iraq that dominated some newspapers' front pages Thursday may be a sign of more graphic images to come as the media responds to a world in which violence is an everyday occurrence.

Kenny Irby, visual journalism group leader at The Poynter Institute, a school for professional journalists, said such imagery will increase because the "taste litmus test" has changed.

"The 21st century we live in is an era of war and violent confrontation, and we can't censor that and withhold that from democracy," he said.
